Now, the reason why I 'm showing these isn't for the cake, but what is around the cake. I made everyone attending the party bug hats to wear.
A motley crew were we. (Remember I said that this year was E's first kid party- so yes, it was all adults wearing the hats- I think I'll spare you (and well us) the pictures of everyone sitting around the house in our very festive bug party wear.) Aside from wanting a dinosaur party this year, the only thing Ezra asked me for were more hats. Dinosaur hats. Hmmmmm.
This is what I came up with. Ahh, the faint smell of Girl Scouts or my third grade paper mache map of Alaska. Its been a long time since I've done this. (I added cinnamon to the flour/water mix and it actually didn't smell as bad.)

A little paint and some art foam and tah-dah! Dinosaurs!
The kids chose their own dinosaur to be when they arrived at the house. It was a stampede of T-Rex, Pteranadon's and Triceratops for the next half-hour or so. The only problem with the hats was getting the kids to stand still to take their pictures. (It didn't happen.) Here are the couple that I did get, and they aren't the best quality- but you get the idea, and they look pretty cute.
