If you know me, you undoubtedly know my absolute love, zest, joie de vivre, in all things autumn. I relish the fall and all that accompanies it. I must say however, while taking Leo out last night for his mid-evening bathroom break, I felt rather sad, and slightly betrayed by summer. Oh you purists- I know, I know autumn does not officially begin until the 21st of this month, but is there really anyone among us who doesn't truly see the last day of August as the "real" last day of summer? So there I was wrapped up in a sweater, wearing socks & tennis shoes, jeans and all, still feeling the evenings chill and cursing Leo to poop faster so we could get back inside. Then, suddenly as we turned around, there was one little blurb of light in my backyard. Could it be? Yes, one firefly- only one, and as Leo pulled me now to come inside I looked around to see him flash again. We wait, Leo pulls. We wait, Leo pulls. Nothing. As I was standing there-waiting for my dog to do his thing, wishing to go inside from this pukey pre-season chill, I almost missed one of my favorite things about summer say goodbye to me. I thought they were all gone for the season. How lucky was I to be there to catch that one bright blink! I kept checking out my backyard randomly throughout the night, but no one else was there. Here's to those little reminders- to enjoy and savor every minute that we have-to understand that everything truly does go by, in a flash.
